Operator and Staff Minimum Training Requirements
Operators and staff in all Personal Care Homes must meet many requirements, including but not limited to the following:
- Basic First Aid is required upon employment.
- The Personal Care Worker Course provided through St. John Ambulance required within 3 months of employment.
- Staff who are dealing with food service or preparation must complete a valid certificate in basic food service sanitation.
- Staff must provide a mandatory criminal record check prior to working with residents, renewable every 3 years or on an as needed basis at the request of the operator.
- Operators must take the Licensees’ Orientation Course provided through the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health.
- Staff who are assisting with medications must pass the online Medication Assistance Module provided through the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health.
- Staff must be on site at the personal care home 24 hours each day.
- There must be sufficient care staff on duty at the home to meet the needs of each resident at all times and to carry out all plans (evacuation plan, lost resident plan, etc.).
- In homes with 11 or more residents, the staff must be awake at night.
- Only adult persons supervise or provide care to the residents.
- Staff must take some type of additional training that would be helpful to their work at least once every 2 years.
- Proper knowledge and education are required when caring for residents with dementia.
- Staff is required to maintain resident confidentiality.
- If the authorized capacity is 21 to 30 residents, a care aide is required to be working in the facility at least 5 days per week.
- If the authorized capacity is 31 or more residents, a health care professional is required to be working in the facility at least 5 days per week.
- Staff must have appropriate knowledge and skills to give residents the care that they need.
